799. Scripture prediction, or prophecy, as it is popularly called, is not merely sacred history written beforehand. That which is prophesied generally relates to events which take place with increasing accuracy as to the details described in the prophecy, in succeeding epochs of human history, until the details are filled out to the full. Providence designs that we shall only grasp the chief features of the description before the fulfillment,¾and that, for two main purposes: First, that we may recognize, as the events take place, that the Bible prophecy is inspired,¾is the promulgation of One who knows the future as well as the past, and so our faith in Him be cultivated (John 14:29); and second, that when we see the event predicted about to come to pass, we may regulate our conduct to suit it (Luke 21:20-21), and prepare for what is coming.

Bushnell’s thoughts here are ever so affirming and comforting to me. I SEE some scriptures quite prophetically (some of the same ones she sees)… Certain ones, I have discussed in various online venues (I’m so thankful for the internet where geography is no limitation. I can meet others who enjoy digging into such “geeky” depths of Bible Study). I find that “scholarly” Christians are generally VERY into the “historical context” and seem suspicious about a prophetic understanding of the text…. as if Paul wrote 1 Timothy ONLY to the 1st century church at Ephesus and it doesn’t apply to ME TODAY. OTH, another branch of christendom is VERY suspicious of the scholars but is captive to a tradition which devalues women. Sometimes I feel that I am in no man’s land. The way I see it fits nowhere. I feel alone. NO ONE understands. But I see Katherine Bushnell understands.
GOD’s Word is NOT a dead letter. Its not a mere “history book”. GOD’s Word is a LOVE LETTER from HIM to ME and I can read HIS WORD devotionally and hear HIS voice and feel HIS presence. GOD’s word is supernatural! GOD’s Word is ALIVE AND ACTIVE, POWERFUL AND RELEVANT TODAY every bit as much as in the first century, perhaps even more relevant? And that is what paragraph 799 seems to recognize. The picture that occurred to me about this relates to some of my recovery from various traumatic events of my life. I find that I have to re-visit the same traumatic episodes over and over and each time I am healed a little bit more. I have heard people compare this to peeling layers of an onion. I think of it more as a spiral progressing upward which starts wide and rather far off the center at the bottom and moves progressively more and more to the center as one climbs upward- like climbing a mountain by circling round and round. I think Prophecy is also progressive like that. Each generation of believers receives a little more revelation which brings us closer to the truth and closer to the summit and the marriage supper of the Lamb.
Click Here for a quote from Jeanne Guyon 1648-1717 which expresses “the simplicity that is in Christ”. ANYONE can go high and deep with HIM- not just scholars, not just men.
