8. And then, women must never forget that all this addition to the text was not only the work of men exclusively, but of men who, in their day, were, as Jews, bitter opponents of the teachings and of the spirit of Christianity. Furthermore, if we may judge from the spirit of the teachings of the Talmud on the “woman question” (for the Talmud was then in the ascendancy, and the sayings of the rabbis considered more authoritative than Scripture itself), these amenders of the original text, as a class, held women in utter contempt. Dr. Paul Isaac Hershon (to quote one of the many witnesses to this statement) says: “The rabbis, over and over again, teach the utter inferiority of woman: they put a definite seal as it were on the degraded life of the female sex which for ages has been lived by women in the East as in the West.” A certain Rabbi Yochanan, we are told, quotes the Mishnic (the Mishna is the most ancient and important part of the Talmud) rabbis as teaching that a man may do as he pleases with his wife: “It is like a piece of meat brought from the shambles, which one may eat, salt, roast, partially or wholly cooked.” A woman once complained before Rav (a great rabbi) of bad treatment from her husband. He replied: “What is the difference between thee and a fish, which one may eat either broiled or cooked?” But Jews alone did not hold women in contempt at that time in human history. It was an unfortunate time, as regards women, for fixing the sense of the Holy Scriptures.

The lesson reveals how the rabbis held women in contempt. Women were viewed as a thing, “a piece of meat”.
Observation of the modern culture suggests that a contemptuous attitude towards women persists. Perhaps objectification and contempt towards women is even escalating.
In this present age of rampant porn use among even Christian men, are not women viewed every bit as much as a “piece of meat” as they were by the rabbis?
I think you’re right, Charis, but I can tell you from living in a “traditionalist” house and going to “traditional” churches all my life, few Christians see it that way. Most see women as having become dominant and evil and bringing our society down with them. In my family the “women’s lib movement” is blamed for the high rate of divorce as well as the high rate of abortion. They see our culture as “man hating”.
“Man hating” is wrong, BUT comes straight out of wounded places of having been mistreated by men. Sadly, the divorce rate in the church being HIGHER than the divorce rate in the world suggests that Christian men are better at mistreating their wives. Christian men should be role models to the world of nourishing, cherishing, treasuring, valuing their wives. Men who use porn cannot do that.
Porn Castrates: Impotent Man, Omnipotent GOD
Women’s lib does not cause divorce. Mistreatment of wives causes divorce. Before “women’s lib” women were trapped. Women’s lib opened the cage door, and I believe that GOD is pleased that his precious beloved daughters now have freedom to leave abusive situations.
You are right that “man hating” comes from being hurt by men. I have struggled with it myself, however we ‘war not against flesh and blood’ but against Satan. Men are themselves victims in this fallen system. It is easy to blame men for the oppression of women in the church, but we must remember two things:
1) All the men who have risen above this and faught for the equality of women and 2) All the women who oppose it (like my mom and grandmother, to name just TWO)
Hate is a dangerous thing, especially for the one who harbors it. God has made us ‘more than conquerers,’ but we will forever be victims if we choose Satan’s path of bitterness and hate.
